Forged during the studio’s early design-build projects, M1DTW developed an ethos based on the intelligent use of material, refined detailing, accountable workflows, and clear communication. Since that time, the studio has evolved into what we now call a ‘design-deliver’ practice.
Understanding that architecture is always the product of collective effort, we place a high value on working with and learning from project stakeholders and those whose hands will construct the projects. In fact, it’s also our network of consultants, makers, fabricators, builders, engineers, and craftspeople that allows us to expand our capabilities and punch above our weight class.
Our design process deploys a phased approach to all our projects, regardless of scale. This method overlays a structured decision-making framework across the often non-linear process of design, allowing both the design team and our clients to make the right decisions at the right time.

M1DTW consists of a tightly-knit team composed of experienced architects, designers, and support staff committed to thoughtful design, clear communication, and accountable workflows, all in the service of our clients and their missions.
We believe in the importance of a balanced life/work relationship, and seek to provide an enriching experience for our team to develop as design professionals as seen by our work and our reputation as innovators in practice.
Christian Unverzagt is the founder of M1DTW and a partner. Unverzagt has received numerous awards for his work, including over a dozen honor awards from AIA Michigan and AIA Detroit, a NAHA for Best Salon Design in North America, and a “50 Books/50 Covers” award from the AIGA for one of the best-designed books of the year.
Thomas Affeldt is a registered architect and a partner at M1DTW.Over the past ten years, he has led projects through design from feasibility studies through construction contract administration.
Kerry Conway is a senior designer at M1DTW, having joined the firm in 016. M.Arch University of Michigan. She works on projects at all phases and brings thoroughness and care to her work.
Cara Wagner has been with M1DTW since 2021. She assists on projects at all phases and brings attention to detail to her work.
Amethyst Davis has been working with M1DTW since 2017 and plays a vital supporting role in assisting management with bookkeeping, marketing, and business development.
